Magnesia Canyon Hike

Description: Join our volunteers for a unique hiking experience in the Magnesia Spring Ecological Canyon trail. Magnesia Canyon is only open from October through December and provides wonderful opportunities to see the endangered Peninsular Bighorn Sheep and many other desert critters.  The dramatic canyon walls tell their own story of how rain events have shaped our mountains and canyons over the millennia of time. It’s a great experience close to downtown Rancho Mirage.

Overview: This moderate hike is generally suitable for novice hikers who want a bit of a challenge. The terrain will involve a moderate incline and may have some steeper sections.

Time: 8:30AM – 11:30AM

Distance: 3.25 miles

Elevation Gain: 380 feet (equals 38 flights of stairs)

Terrain & Obstacles: The trail follows a sandy wash, with several rocky sections requiring high step-ups and occasional hand-assisted rock scrambling to navigate the canyon floor. No technical climbing skills are required.

Requirements: Minimum 2 liters of water and a snack, Closed-toe shoes, No dogs allowed

Recommended: Sunscreen and hat, Hiking poles, Long sleeve shirt

Meeting Location: Meet at the entrance to Blixseth Park.   UTM Coordinates: 33°44’33.8 N,  116°25’15.6 W

A suggested non-refundable donation of $10.00 per person is appreciated and encouraged to support our volunteer programs.

Reservations: Ticket reservations begin 2 weeks prior to the event and will be published at that time.
