DESCRIPTION:The Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains is a hotspot for biodiversity with over 3\,100 species. Help us find and document more species by participating in this year-long bioblitz event to keep identifying new species. \nAnyone can participate by going outside and exploring any of the over 280+ miles of designated trails in the Monument and identifying any plants or animals you see using the iNaturalist app on your phone. Be sure to add the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument project to your iNaturalist account to participate. Learn more about iNaturalist here. \nParticipants are encouraged to explore the trails and record as many species as they can using the iNaturalist app. There will be one day that week that participants can participate in a special bioblitz event with other participants and local researchers and specialists. Info can be requested by calling the Friends of the Desert Mountains at 760-568-9918 or the Visitor Center (760) 862-9984 a week prior to the start of the event. \nLocation: Special one day event with researchers and specialists is To Be Determined. SUMMARY:Palm Desert Full Moon Hikes (NEW!)
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce Full Moon Hikes in Palm Desert! There will be four different hikes offered\, please read each description carefully and select the trail best for your skill level. \nHomestead Trail: (MODERATE; for Experienced Hikers) This hike has full moon shadows beginning with the Homestead Trailhead\, to the Hopalong Cassidy Trail\, as you descend the moon will be hidden behind the mountainside on the way to the Gabby Hayes Trail and to Cahuilla Hills Park and returning to Homme Adams Park. The elevation is 500-feet. This is a 2.2-mile loop trail on sandy uneven desert terrain for an experienced hiker to enjoy. IMPORTANT: 25% of the trail is in the dark\, must bring a headlamp and hiking poles are recommended.\n \nCahuilla Hills and Fox Canyon: (EASY; for Beginner Hikers) The hike begins at the Homestead trailhead to Cahuilla Hills Park. We exit the Park heading north by Fox Canyon where we will loop back to the Gabby Hayes trail and return to check-in. Elevation is 250-feet. This is a 2.1-mile lollipop trail on a sandy uneven desert terrain.\n \nCahuilla Hills and Gabby Hayes: (EASY; for Beginner Hikers) We begin the hike at the Homestead trailhead to Cahuilla Hills Park. At the tennis courts we turn left to the Gabby Hayes Trail and loop back through the park. Returning to check-in. Elevation is 200-feet. This is a 1.75-mile lollipop trail on a sandy uneven desert terrain.\n \nMoon Walk at Homme Adams Park: (EASIEST; for any Hiker) This is an easy stroll in the moonlight and listen to the quiet nighttime desert. This is a 1.0-mile loop walk on a sandy uneven track with some cobble. SUMMARY:Birding Walk-About at the Monument Visitor Center
DESCRIPTION:Our experienced Friends’ birding volunteer docent will share interesting facts about the Coachella Valley native species and other migratory birds found in the National Monument. We begin the search for our feathered friends in their native desert habitat on the Randall Henderson Trail into the lower sandy wash. We circle back and walk to the Visitor Center and the birding observation area. Then onto the Ed Hastey Garden Walk (paved) and tortoise habitat area. Total walking distance about 1.0 mile. Elevation gain is about 25 feet. \nBring your binoculars\, 1 liter of water\, sun hat\, sunscreen\, and camera. Sorry\, no dogs are allowed for this event. \nRSVP required.
