DESCRIPTION:June 6th is National Trails Day with the U.S. Forest Service! Participate in the nationwide movement of trail stewardship projects and give back to trails! \nHelp clear pine needles and leaf buildup from the trail\, restore drainage features\, remove fallen trees\, and improve directional signage near the charcoal kiln transition area. \nPHYSICAL RATING: Moderate to difficult. Participants will hike about 5 round-trip miles on uneven terrain at elevations between 6\,000–7\,500 feet. Activities may include bending\, shoveling\, and moving soil\, branches\, trees\, and other debris. \nIMPORTANT PLEASE READ ABOUT THE LOCATION: Meet at the top end of the Sawmill Trail\, which is located about .25 miles past Santa Rosa Spring on Santa Rosa Road (7S02). This is approximately 8 miles above Highway 74. You need an AWD\, high-clearance vehicle to reach the location.

DESCRIPTION:The Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains is a hotspot for biodiversity with over 3\,100 species. Join us for a week of recording observations in the SRSJM National Monument’s desert\, foothills and mountains. Help us find and document more species by participating in this yearlong bioblitz event to keep identifying new species. \nAnyone can participate by going outside and exploring any of the over 280+ miles of designated trails in the Monument and identifying any plants or animals you see using the iNaturalist app on your phone. Be sure to add the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument project to your iNaturalist account to participate. Learn more about iNaturalist here. \n \nParticipants are encouraged to explore the trails and record as many species as they can using the iNaturalist app. There will be one day that week that participants can participate in a special bioblitz event with other participants and local researchers and specialists. Info can be requested by calling the Friends of the Desert Mountains at 760-568-9918 or the Visitor Center (760) 862-9984 a week prior to the start of the event. \nLocation: Special one day event with researchers and specialists is To Be Determined. Volunteer astronomers will guide you through the cosmos\, sharing fascinating stories while helping you explore planets\, star clusters\, nebulae\, galaxies\, and other celestial wonders through a variety of telescopes. \nWhether you’re an experienced stargazer or looking through a telescope for the very first time\, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Monument after dark and connect with the natural world in a whole new way. \nWhat to Bring \n\nA chair for comfortable viewing\nWater and weather-appropriate clothing\nA red-light flashlight if you have one (please avoid white flashlights whenever possible to preserve everyone’s night vision)\n\nImportant Information \n\nChildren are welcome and encouraged\, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.\nOur volunteer astronomers are happy to help everyone enjoy the telescopes. To keep the equipment properly aligned and provide the best viewing experience for all guests\, please allow volunteers to operate and adjust the telescopes.\nThis event is wheelchair accessible on asphalt.\nThe program is offered weather permitting.
