Mostly level or with a slight incline. \nTime: 8:30AM – 11:00AM \nDifficulty: Easiest (Rating: 40); For more information about the Difficulty Rating: Shenandoah Hiking Difficulty Scale \nDistance: 3 miles \nElevation Gain: 392 feet (equals 40 flights of stairs) \nTerrain & Obstacles: This trail is in a sandy wash with uneven terrain. As the canyon narrows there will be some rocks and small boulders to hike around and step over. DESCRIPTION:Grab your binoculars and join a Friends’ volunteer docent birding expert to look for our feathered desert residents. In this unique urban area\, we are still able to find a little native desert environment surrounded by local trees and shrubs that many of our feathered friends call home. As you walk the perimeter of an open desert property adjacent to the golf course\, you will find approximately 25-30 different species on your 1-mile walk-about. This is truly a “jewel in the desert” location to be enjoyed. \nBring your binoculars\, 1 liter of water\, a sun hat\, sunscreen and wear close-toed shoes. Volunteer astronomers will guide you through the cosmos\, sharing fascinating stories while helping you explore planets\, star clusters\, nebulae\, galaxies\, and other celestial wonders through a variety of telescopes. \nWhether you’re an experienced stargazer or looking through a telescope for the very first time\, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Monument after dark and connect with the natural world in a whole new way. \nWhat to Bring \n\nA chair for comfortable viewing\nWater and weather-appropriate clothing\nA red-light flashlight if you have one (please avoid white flashlights whenever possible to preserve everyone’s night vision)\n\nImportant Information \n\nChildren are welcome and encouraged\, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.\nOur volunteer astronomers are happy to help everyone enjoy the telescopes. To keep the equipment properly aligned and provide the best viewing experience for all guests\, please allow volunteers to operate and adjust the telescopes.\nThis event is wheelchair accessible on asphalt.\nThe program is offered weather permitting. DESCRIPTION:The Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains is a hotspot for biodiversity with over 3\,100 species. Help us find and document more species by participating in this year-long bioblitz event to keep identifying new species. \nAnyone can participate by going outside and exploring any of the over 280+ miles of designated trails in the Monument and identifying any plants or animals you see using the iNaturalist app on your phone. Be sure to add the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument project to your iNaturalist account to participate. Learn more about iNaturalist here. \nParticipants are encouraged to explore the trails and record as many species as they can using the iNaturalist app. There will be one day that week that participants can participate in a special bioblitz event with other participants and local researchers and specialists. Info can be requested by calling the Friends of the Desert Mountains at 760-568-9918 or the Visitor Center (760) 862-9984 a week prior to the start of the event. \nLocation: Special one day event with researchers and specialists is To Be Determined. For more information about the Difficulty Rating: Shenandoah Hiking Difficulty Scale \nDistance: 2.5 miles \nElevation Gain: 250 feet (equals 25 flights of stairs) \nTerrain/Obstacles: The trail involves sections of rock scrambling\, requiring the use of hands and feet to navigate large step ups climbing through a steep\, large boulder field. DESCRIPTION:Discover the wonders of the night sky at the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument! \nJoin Friends of the Desert Mountains and the Astronomical Society of the Desert for a free evening of stargazing beneath some of Southern California’s darkest skies. Volunteer astronomers will guide you through the cosmos\, sharing fascinating stories while helping you explore planets\, star clusters\, nebulae\, galaxies\, and other celestial wonders through a variety of telescopes. \nWhether you’re an experienced stargazer or looking through a telescope for the very first time\, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Monument after dark and connect with the natural world in a whole new way. \nWhat to Bring \n\nA chair for comfortable viewing\nWater and weather-appropriate clothing\nA red-light flashlight if you have one (please avoid white flashlights whenever possible to preserve everyone’s night vision)\n\nImportant Information \n\nChildren are welcome and encouraged\, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.\nOur volunteer astronomers are happy to help everyone enjoy the telescopes. To keep the equipment properly aligned and provide the best viewing experience for all guests\, please allow volunteers to operate and adjust the telescopes.\nThis event is wheelchair accessible on asphalt.\nThe program is offered weather permitting. Excessive heat\, cloud cover\, or other unsafe conditions may require cancellation. SUMMARY:Birding Walk-About\, Desert Willow
DESCRIPTION:Grab your binoculars and join a Friends’ volunteer docent birding expert to look for our feathered desert residents. In this unique urban area\, we are still able to find a little native desert environment surrounded by local trees and shrubs that many of our feathered friends call home. As you walk the perimeter of an open desert property adjacent to the golf course\, you will find approximately 25-30 different species on your 1-mile walk-about. This is truly a “jewel in the desert” location to be enjoyed. \nBring your binoculars\, 1 liter of water\, a sun hat\, sunscreen and wear close-toed shoes. Sorry\, no dogs are allowed for this event. \nRSVP required. Check-in begins 15 minutes prior to start time. \nNote: We will meet in the parking lot on the right side of Desert Willow Drive just before entering the golf club.
