DESCRIPTION:Discover the wonders of the night sky at the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument! \nJoin Friends of the Desert Mountains and the Astronomical Society of the Desert for a free evening of stargazing beneath some of Southern California’s darkest skies. Volunteer astronomers will guide you through the cosmos\, sharing fascinating stories while helping you explore planets\, star clusters\, nebulae\, galaxies\, and other celestial wonders through a variety of telescopes. \nWhether you’re an experienced stargazer or looking through a telescope for the very first time\, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Monument after dark and connect with the natural world in a whole new way. \nWhat to Bring \n\nA chair for comfortable viewing\nWater and weather-appropriate clothing\nA red-light flashlight if you have one (please avoid white flashlights whenever possible to preserve everyone’s night vision)\n\nImportant Information \n\nChildren are welcome and encouraged\, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.\nOur volunteer astronomers are happy to help everyone enjoy the telescopes. To keep the equipment properly aligned and provide the best viewing experience for all guests\, please allow volunteers to operate and adjust the telescopes.\nThis event is wheelchair accessible on asphalt.\nThe program is offered weather permitting. Excessive heat\, cloud cover\, or other unsafe conditions may require cancellation. DESCRIPTION:Discover how the desert comes alive after dark! Do you know which animals change colors when you use a blacklight? \nUsing blacklights\, a Friends’ volunteer docent will begin a short walk on uneven cobbled desert terrain in the basin below the dike/levy looking for scorpions and other nocturnal creatures that inhabit our desert. \nThis is a family friendly event. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Bring water\, wear closed-toed shoes and a black light if you have one. If not\, we will have a few black lights to share. Sorry\, no dogs allowed on this trail. \nFor more information contact Friends of the Desert Mountains at 760-568-9918. \nPlease note: We will meet at the Art Smith Trailhead parking lot located just past the driveway for the Visitor Center approximately 100 feet on the southwest side of Highway 74. \nView map at coordinates: 33.667957\, -116.407666 \n RSVP is required\, check-in 15 minutes prior to start time.
