VOLUNTEER ONLY! Volunteer Campout

VolStar.png

The Friends annual volunteer campout will be at Dos Palmas Preserve. The Preserve is a special place near the Salton Sea where native palms abound and desert pupfish thrive under careful monitoring. We will be camping around the pond near the "old ranch house."

Early Friday evening (Nov. 10, 2017) we will set up camp and hang out. Sorry folks, there are fire restrictions, so we will NOT be able have a campfire, but we can find creative ways to roast marshmallows if desired. We will have some of our local BLM friends and scientists to inform and entertain…so it should be a great weekend.

Saturday we will be looking for and learning about birds, bats, local history and current restoration efforts. Dos Palmas is not far from CV. For those of you who have not brought your camping gear, Saturday is a great "day trip" to enjoy learning and meet with fellow volunteers. Sunday is packing up to go home.

If you are interested in attending, contact Ada for full details.

You must be a current volunteer to participate: Click here to get started.  Call 760-568-9918 for more information and RSVP.

The Ghost Lake of the Desert The Evidence for Past Seas in the Salton Trough

The origin of the Salton Sea, California’s largest lake, is commonly attributed to the accidental failure of irrigation canals from the Colorado River. However, this lake is merely the latest incarnation of a series dating back several million years, ever since the Colorado River delta cut the Salton Trough from the Gulf of California. The geological history of these ancient lakes is preserved by the sediments which they left behind. Scientific evaluation of these deposits provides an understanding of how these lakes formed in the past and how long they survived before returning to desert conditions. These natural records provide a useful context for evaluating potential remediation and stabilization strategies for the Salton Sea.

Guest Speaker: Andrew Bishop, associate professional researcher, UCR EDGE Institute. Sponsored by UCR Palm Desert.
