National Public Lands Day

Bureau of Land Management and Friends will be hosting a trail clean-up in the Pinyon Flats area.  Bring your family, friends, students and coworkers to spend the day outdoors giving back to your community by removing invasive species, maintaining trails, campgrounds and more. Your work will help ensure our public lands continue to be beautiful places to enjoy.  Bring your sun hat, wear long plants and sturdy closed toe shoes. Reusable water bottles are recommended. Tools, Personal Protective Equipment and iced water (bottle not included) will be provided for participants.

Meet at the Sawmill Trail parking lot off Highway 74.  Registration begins at 7:45 AM.  First 50 people will receive a free tee shirt.

Carrizo Canyon Opening Day

The Carrizo Canyon Ecological Preserve opens for the season on October 1st. This docent led hike takes you into a canyon that provides a chance to see Bighorn Sheep and other desert critters, learn about the geology of the area and a great outdoor experience close to downtown Palm Desert. Hike rating is easy to moderate, approximately 2-3 miles round trip. Elevation gain approximately 100-500 feet. Bring snacks and 2 liters of water per person. Wear closed-toed shoes, hat and sunscreen. Minors must be accompanied by parent or guardian.  Registration begins at 7:45 AM.

Happy Tails Dog Adventure at the La Quinta Cove

Dogs! Fetch your leash and join other dogs on this desert outing in the Santa Rosa Mountains. This walk provides great exercise while exploring the desert. Learn about dog friendly trails in the National Monument – and hike on! Pack plenty of water for you and your K-9 friends for this fun outing.

Hike rating is easy walk, 200 feet elevation and 3 miles.

Join Friends staff and volunteers, City of La Quinta staff and the staff from the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument for a clean-up day to protect and conserve our mountains. We will be picking up trash, removing invasive plants and improving the safety of the trails network. Tasks will vary from easy to strenuous.   Snacks will be provided by Friends.  Water (re-usable water bottles recommended), wear long pants, sturdy closed toe shoes, a sun hat, sunscreen.

Earth Day Bird-a-thon Bus Tour

Whether you are a beginner or a serious birder, enjoy spectacular desert and mountain scenery on a guided bus tour to well-known birding and nature hotspots in and around the Coachella Valley. Before the day is over, we hope to identify 100 different bird species, have lots of fun, and raise money for conservation. Discover the desert after dark! We will take a short walk along the Randall Henderson Trail, looking for the nocturnal creatures that inhabit our desert. The Astronomical Society of the Desert will have telescopes set up at the Visitor Center to observe stars, planets, and other features of the night sky! This is a family event. Minors must be accompanied by parent or guardian. Bring water and wear closed-toed shoes.
