Dead Indian Canyon to the Oasis Hike

Description: This hike is part of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument’s 25th Anniversary event. Dead Indian Canyon is only open from October through December and provides wonderful opportunities to see the endangered Peninsular Bighorn Sheep and many other desert critters. You will learn about the geology of the area and a great outdoor experience close to downtown Palm Desert. For this special hike, we will climb all the way to the oasis.

Overview: This moderate hike is generally suitable for novice hikers who want a bit of a challenge

Time: 8:30AM – 11:00AM

Difficulty: Moderate due to rock scrambling. For more information about the Difficulty Rating: Shenandoah Hiking Difficulty Scale

Distance: 2.5 miles

Elevation Gain: 250 feet (equals 25 flights of stairs)

Terrain/Obstacles: The trail involves sections of rock scrambling, requiring the use of hands and feet to navigate large step ups climbing through a steep, large boulder field. No technical climbing skills are required.

Requirements: Minimum 2 liters of water and a snack, Closed-toe shoes, No dogs allowed

Recommended: Sunscreen and hat, Hiking poles, Long sleeve shirt

Meeting Location: We will meet at the Art Smith Trailhead parking lot located just past the driveway for the Visitor Center approximately 100 feet on the southwest side of Highway 74.   UTM Coordinates: 33.667957, -116.407666
