As We Head Into Hiking Season ... Remember to Recreate Responsibly!

Stay safe, and help others in our community stay safe with you, by recreating responsibly

Follow these seven steps:

  1. Know Before You Go: Most trails in our area are now open, but always be sure to check beforehand for the most up to date information, and have a backup plan in case of over-crowded trails. Be sure to check the weather and avoid outdoor activity during heat advisories and the hottest parts of the day.

  2. Practice Physical Distancing: For the most part, being active outdoors seems to be one of the lowest risk activities for contracting COVID-19. Reduce the risk even more by traveling in small groups and maintaining physical distancing of at least six feet and using a mask when passing others on the trail.

  3. Plan Ahead: Always carry the 10 Essentials when you're recreating outdoors, and practice self-reliance on the trail. Especially, bring more water than you think you will need and be sure to let others know your plan for the day. Do not expect visitor center and restroom facilities to be open, and plan accordingly.

  4. Play It Safe: It's tempting to see the pandemic as a chance to head deep into the backcountry or to take on new challenges outdoors. Be aware of the increased risks and choose easier, familiar routes for your safety and to avoid endangering search and rescue personnel.

  5. Explore Locally: We are very fortunate here in the Coachella Valley to have access to year round outdoor recreation - even on the hottest days the temperature on Mount San Jacinto is relatively cool. Be mindful of the impact of long distance travel and rural communities.

  6. Leave No Trace: Be an active part of making the outdoors safe and welcoming for all identities and abilities. We are all in this together!

  7. Build An Inclusive Outdoors Be an active part of making the outdoors a safe and welcoming for all identities and abilities.
